Today I visited this Nanxiong cuisine restaurant with a few friends. Nanxiong is a place under Shaoguan, Guangdong, and its cuisine blends characteristics of Hakka, Jiangxi, and Hunan dishes. I had never tried it before, so I came specifically to taste it. It took about fifteen minutes to drive from Pingzhou, and there is a free parking lot at the entrance with two-hour parking, which is quite convenient.

There were five of us, and we ordered six dishes: duck king, sour cabbage with large intestine, stuffed tofu, fish, seasonal vegetables, and eggplant. After trying everything, my biggest impression was that it’s spicier than Cantonese food but not as intense as Hunan cuisine. The duck king, in particular, had a noticeable spiciness, but the aroma and flavor were excellent. Every dish was very appetizing, the kind that gets better as you eat. I felt I could eat three bowls of rice just with these dishes.

This restaurant has been at its current location for over three years. It’s a family-run small eatery, and basically only one chef cooks, so the serving speed is quite slow. After we ordered, we waited about half an hour for the first dish. The waitress had warned us in advance that during busy times, waiting over an hour is normal. There is even a sign in the restaurant that says “Please don’t rush the dishes,” so it’s best to be mentally prepared before coming.

Service was average. The waitress, presumably the owner’s daughter, had a straightforward attitude and wasn’t particularly warm. Because we waited quite a while, we asked if we could get another plate of peanuts, but were told the second plate would cost extra. When we paid 273 yuan and asked to round it down to 270, she insisted that not a single cent could be waived. Of course, doing business by the rules is fine, but if her tone had been softer, the overall experience would have been more pleasant.

Overall, I approve of the taste. The dishes are distinctive and indeed delicious. If you haven’t tried Nanxiong cuisine, I think it’s worth experiencing once—it’s a local specialty that sits between Hakka and Hunan-Jiangxi flavors. However, because the dishes are on the spicy side and the serving speed is slow, I probably won’t come often myself, but I might consider it occasionally when I want a change of taste.
