Today, a friend brought me to this Hunan restaurant. He said he booked a week in advance just to eat here. The place is tiny, with only five tables. We arrived at 5 PM and were the first customers, but soon after we sat down, people started lining up outside. Clearly, despite its size, this place is very popular, and the kitchen was busy non-stop.
We ordered five dishes, and overall, the flavors were on point. What impressed me most were the thunder chili with preserved egg and the chicken feet stir-fried with pork kidney. The Hunan-style spicy, heavy flavors with wok hei were excellent and very appetizing.
The kidney was well-prepared, with no off-flavor and a tender-crisp texture. At 68 yuan, it’s not cheap, but the taste was good. I actually preferred the chicken feet—they were probably pressure-cooked until soft, then stir-fried, so they were very flavorful and satisfyingly spicy, the kind you can’t stop eating.
In comparison, the cured beef was a bit ordinary, not as impressive as the other dishes. But overall, this small joint that relies on taste does have its reasons for being popular.
I also want to mention that despite the simple dining environment, their restroom was spotlessly clean with no odor. That really surprised me. Many restaurants with good food neglect hygiene details, but they even maintain the restroom so well—definitely commendable.
