Coming to Jieyang, a place full of delicious food everywhere, choosing what to eat is both simple and difficult.
Simple because you can randomly walk into any small shop, and the taste is likely not bad; difficult because time is limited and stomach capacity is limited, so you always want to save every meal for the most worthwhile place.
The food in tourist areas isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s mostly catering to tourists. What truly surprises me are the old shops hidden in residential areas. This Xitou Xiang Chive Rice is one such place—not on a main road, no conspicuous sign, quietly tucked away in a corner of the residential area, relying entirely on local customers.
It was my first time eating chive rice. I ordered large intestine, chicken feet, braised egg, bitter melon, and paired it with a fried dough stick. When it was served, the ingredients looked very ordinary, but they complemented each other perfectly. Each piece was soaked in braising sauce, and the more I ate, the more fragrant it became.
Many people ask on their first visit: what exactly is chive rice? I think it’s neither like chive rice soup nor like congee. The rice sheets inside are quite chewy, somewhat like cold skin noodles but softer and stickier. The so-called chive rice is actually a rice soup made from rice, with just the right consistency, blending various braised ingredients together. It’s not as thick as congee, nor as thin as noodle soup—it’s somewhere in between, hard to describe accurately in words.
If I had to sum it up in two words: delicious.
When visiting Jieyang, if I only have one breakfast, I would save my stomach for this kind of local old shop rather than a hotel buffet. After all, in a city of food, every meal deserves to be taken seriously.
